What is the purpose of this research?
Abstract
Reimagining History: Photographing World War II Reenactments a practice-led research project investigates the intersection of performative photography, and humanities-based research, focusing on how historical reenactors' relationship to photography holds potential for reimagining historical narratives in the public domain. This practice-led research project embeds a war correspondent persona, Jack Redd, into World War II reenactment groups across the Midwest region of the United States of America. By situating this research within a hobby that reenacts historical events from 1938 to 1945, this project examines parallels between that period's use of restaging battle scenes for the camera using embedded combat photography and how these practices are now implemented during historical reenactments. Through performative photography methods, this research develops a visual methodology for analyzing the impact of photography within reenactments and its effects on reenactors. The research produces a series of photographs published in a tabloid titled Camougraph, which circulates through various World War II reenactment events. This research contributes to scholarship on photography, historiography and visual ethnography relating to historical reenactments. (Updated October 13, 2025)
